The short answer

The 101st Airborne Museum, nicknamed "Le Mess," is at Avenue de la Gare 13 in downtown Bastogne. It has life-size dioramas, uniforms and equipment of the 101st Airborne. In the cellar, you live through the Christmas Eve 1944 German air raid. Open Tuesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. (closed Mondays). Adults €14, active military €12, children 7–12 €8, under 7 free. Allow 1 to 1½ hours.

A building with its own history

The museum occupies the former officers' mess of the Belgian 2nd Chasseurs Ardennais regiment. From 1940 to 1944, German officers lived here. After the liberation it served the Americans. The name "Le Mess" comes from that past.

What to see

  • Life-size dioramas of paratroopers in combat, in foxholes and in cellars, with authentic uniforms and equipment.
  • The air raid shelter experience: in the basement, sound, light and vibration recreate the German bombing of Bastogne on the night of December 24, 1944.
  • Personal items linked to General Patton.
  • A diorama and personal items honoring a Native American soldier, including his medicine bag (see our page on the Native American memorial at Recogne).
  • A tribute to Vincent Speranza, a paratrooper of H Company, 501st PIR, who came back to Bastogne many times as a veteran.

Tips

  • Pair it with the Bastogne Barracks (5 minutes away) and McAuliffe Square.
  • The building has no elevator. The cellar and upper floors are reached by stairs.
  • Take your time with the dioramas: the details are what make them.
